Marimekko Chairs

These lovely metal framed chairs have been re-painted in a gorgeous and bright red egg-shell and then coated in a light varnish.  I have inserted new feet and re-upholstered the seat in new foam and the iconic Marimekko Unikko fabric

  1. Wow, I love these! I wish I was brave enough to put paint to chairs! The fabric you have used is gorgeous too!

  2. Hi Terrie
It all comes down to the paint and brushes that you use, after sanding down where needed, I undercoat with a Dulux Primer & Undercoat for Wood, then dulux eggshell from the colour mixing dept in DIY stores, the eggshell is water based so no thinners needed to clean the brushes, and also it dries really quickly.

For paint brushes I pop into the local arts and crafts shops and buy the fatest round brushes that they have, I prefer them to paint brushes for DIY as they are softer and dont leave brush lines.

Upholstery is a little scary the first time - especially with the staple gun - yikes - but in the end if your work looks baggy then you can just remove those stubborn staples and try again - and before you do you can also think of treating the chair to some new foam - which can be cut to shape with an electric knife or I prefer big scissors.

If you seriously want to give it a go - buy or beg an old dining chair to practice on - in the end if it does have a slight shappy look it might still have a charm of its own :)
